The most common belief about the Great Pyramid of Giza is also the most wrong: that it was built by slaves. Almost every archaeological find in the last forty years contradicts this. The Egyptians left workmen’s villages, tool marks, ration lists, medical records and burial grounds โ the picture that emerges is a paid, seasonal, skilled workforce fed on bread, beer and enough beef to make modern nutritionists sit up.

Who built the Great Pyramid
The Great Pyramid was commissioned by Pharaoh Khufu of the Fourth Dynasty and completed around 2560 BC. His architect is usually credited as his vizier Hemiunu, whose statue survives and shows a heavy-set man with a face that looks unimpressed by everything. The workforce numbered around 20,000 to 25,000 at peak โ not the hundred thousand Herodotus claimed 2,000 years later after visiting.
In the 1990s, Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass and American Mark Lehner excavated a large workers’ town south of the pyramids at Heit el-Ghurab. They found bakeries producing thousands of loaves a day, breweries, dormitories for 1,600 rotating workers, a hospital with set bones and healed skulls, and cattle bones from prime cuts of beef. This is not a slave camp. It is a well-run construction city.
Who the workers actually were
Two overlapping groups. A permanent core of about 5,000 skilled masons, quarrymen, engineers and administrators, plus a rotating body of about 20,000 seasonal labourers drawn from villages up and down the Nile. The seasonal shifts (three months on, back to the farm afterwards) matched the Nile flood โ during inundation, most agricultural work stopped anyway.
Graffiti left inside the pyramid mentions crew names like “Friends of Khufu” and “Drunkards of Menkaure”. It is jokey. Slaves do not name their gangs.
How they moved the stones
2.3 million blocks. Average block weight 2.5 tonnes, largest around 80 tonnes for the granite over the King’s Chamber. The two questions are: how did they cut them, and how did they move them.
Cutting was straightforward. Limestone for the pyramid core came from a quarry 300 metres south of the pyramid itself. Copper chisels, wooden wedges wetted to expand and split the rock, and abundant labour. The fine white casing limestone was floated across the Nile from Tura, opposite Cairo. The 80-tonne granite blocks came from Aswan, 800 km upriver โ dolerite pounders, wooden sledges, and Nile barges.
Moving them across sand is the interesting part. A 2014 study by researchers at the University of Amsterdam confirmed something obvious once you see it in a tomb painting: they wet the sand ahead of the sledges. Damp sand has half the friction of dry sand. A crew of about 20 men could then drag a 2.5-tonne block. The painting from the tomb of Djehutihotep at Deir el-Bersha actually shows a man pouring water in front of a giant statue on a sledge โ for 200 years Egyptologists thought he was performing a ritual. He was doing his job.
How they got the blocks up
This is where honest archaeology admits some uncertainty. There are three main theories, and it may be that different combinations were used at different heights:
- Straight external ramp: a huge earthen ramp running straight up one side. Works for the bottom third of the pyramid but the ramp would need to be almost as big as the pyramid by the top โ most Egyptologists reject it as the sole method.
- Spiral external ramp: a ramp wrapping the pyramid as it grew. Solves the volume problem but makes corner surveying difficult and would leave archaeological traces we do not find.
- Internal ramp (Jean-Pierre Houdin, 2007): a spiral ramp built inside the pyramid itself, still hidden today. Micro-gravity surveys in 2016-2017 by the Scan Pyramids project detected corridors in the upper half that broadly match this idea. Not proven, but the strongest current candidate.
Whatever the answer, they did it without pulleys, without iron and without wheels for heavy loads. Egyptian engineering used inclined planes, lever arms, wooden rollers and rope. That is enough.
How long it took
Roughly 20 years. This estimate comes from three lines of evidence: Herodotus’ figure (which happens to match), the length of Khufu’s reign (about 23-26 years), and modern construction rate calculations. Placing about 300 blocks a day for 20 years works out to 2.4 million blocks โ very close to the actual count.
The “aliens” objection
Every generation produces someone who insists the pyramids are too perfect for Bronze Age humans and must be alien. It is worth naming the pattern honestly. The theory shows up almost exclusively for monuments built by non-European civilisations โ Egypt, Mesoamerica, Peru โ and almost never for medieval European cathedrals, which are also very impressive. It says more about who is doing the theorising than about who did the building.
The Egyptians left tool marks, workers’ villages, quarry records, engineering diagrams on papyrus, and paintings of themselves doing the work. All the evidence points in one direction: a civilisation that was extremely good at what it did, on a scale that took them 3,000 years to build up to.
